PGA Tour Champions Players

Through Mitsubishi Electric Classic

May 1, 2024

Stephen Ames repeated as champion of the Mitsubishi Electric Classic on his 60th birthday which he started with cake at breakfast.  It was his eighth victory as a PGA Tour Champions player, three of which have been at TPC Sugarloaf.  Horses for courses is a saying in golf, and Ames certainly proved it at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic.

Ames had two eagles in the final round, one at the 6th and the other at the 13th.

“Six was just perfectly up for a number, and I hit the shot that I needed to hit. I mean, going in the hole was obviously a bit of luck,” he said after the victory. “The one on 13 was a good drive. I got it all the way to the back end there, and then I had a straight uphill putt.”

On six, a par 5, he was in the intermediate rough on his first shot. His third shot was from 82 yards, and he spun it back and into the hole for eagle. It was fortuitous because he was three behind at the time. On the 13th, a 310-yard hole, his drive bounced up to the green and past the hole, but he had an uphill of about 20 feet. When his putt found the bottom of the cup, he was in the lead at 14-under par.

By the end, his closest pursuers, Paul Broadhurst and Doug Barron, were four shots back.

In the rankings, there were very few changes, and they were within three places of the previous place in the rankings.

Rankings are based on 12-month performances of Champions Tour players. When a tournament is played, the previous year's results are dropped. Losing a high finish, dropping a low finish, adding a new high finish or a new low finish affects standings.  Players must have a minimum number of points to be included in the rankings, but all players are tracked.
