Through Hoag Classic

March 27, 2024

Padraig Harrington won the Hoag Classic and moved closer to Steve Stricker in the Power Performance Rankings.   Stricker now has a 2.56 point lead over the Irishman.  Last week, it was 3.89 over Harrington.

Harrington managed to recover from a double bogey at the 16th hole by making birdies at the 17th and 18th to solidify the victory. Down the stretch, he was challenged by Thongchai Jaidee and Miguel Angel Jimenez who finished second and third, respectively.

“I have won tournaments hitting out of bounds in the last round. I've won tournaments with two double bogeys like today,” Harrington said. “I knew it was going to be a difficult day, and the key on the difficult days, if you can make enough birdies, because you can't avoid all the bad shots, you can't avoid all the bogeys.”

Harrington is a big fan of playing on PGA Tour Champions, where he says that he gets to relive the glory of the past.

“It's just phenomenal out here that we can come back out after, you know, 25 years of playing professional golf, I'm back out here still enjoying it and winning and hitting shots and feeling under pressure and feeling like an idiot messing up on 16,” he added. “It's just a great place to be,”

In the rankings, there were just a few big changes after the Hoag Classic.

Biggest Moves Up: Thongchai Jaidee, from 27th to 23rd; Robert Karlsson, from 26th to 21st.

Biggest Move Down: Brian Gay, from 24th to 28th.

Rankings are based on 12-month performances of Champions Tour players. When a tournament is played, the previous year's results are dropped. Losing a high finish, dropping a low finish, adding a new high finish or a new low finish affects standings.  Players must have a minimum number of points to be included in the rankings, but all players are tracked.
